well, we could create APIs for more conventional things such as spacecraft operating systems (where maybe the whole codebase cant be shared for ITAR or other reasons), through to things like engineering or settlement designs, where it just makes it easier for people to extend the existing work by having intuitive 'hooks' to grow and add to the core design elements. there could also be standard ways of formatting information or adding header information to data such that it is easy to incorporate into other environments like virtual worlds or planetary browsers, or various science applications, etc.
i'm sure there's other ideas too... just some quick thoughts!

well, i really mean everything-- from mission design documents to reports (lunar architecture team) to software. right now, most people have to go through a fight to get their information (whatever it is, not just data) released to the public. the burden of proof is on them...
